Off Road Vehicles

Preston Beach

An Off Road Vehicle is defined as one, which is not registered for on road use.

There is only one area within the shire where Off Road Vehicles are permitted.

This is between the high and low water marks on the beach at Preston Beach, pursuant to Council Local Laws.

Residents are reminded that all areas of the shire west of the Old Coast Road are prohibited to off road vehicles under the provisions of the "Off Road Vehicles Act".

In all other areas, apart from on private land with the permission of the owner, including the dunes, they are prohibited.

There are certain conditions, which must be observed:

  1. The vehicle being currently registered under the Road Traffic or Off Road Vehicles Act.
  2. Operator must be the holder of a current motor driver's license.
  3. The vehicle must be driven in a manner that is not inconvenient or annoying to other beach users.

All vehicles not holding an on road license must be registered as an Off Road Vehicle. This can be done at any Department of Transport Vehicle Licensing Centre for $6.00. Only driver/riders who hold a current on road license can drive/ride on the beach.

Please observe instructions from Council's Ranger who conducts regular patrols.

Infringements will be issued for non-compliance.

Please note that off road vehicles driven on roads or footpaths is an illegal activity, which should be reported to police. Off road vehicles must be transported to the beach on a trailer and should not be driven on the road at anytime.

The local Police will assist Council's Ranger and will also be conducting regular patrols in the area, enforcing their education campaign focusing on drink driving, seat belts and speeding. Anyone not observing these rules will be heavily targeted.

Any queries can be directed to Council's Ranger, Jody Newton 9733 7816.
