More than 20 years’ service as a councillor for the Shire of Waroona has seen Cr Noel Dew receive one of only 6 Eminent Service Awards from the Western Australia Local Government Association (WALGA). This award is for personal commitment, eminent service and contribution to the local government section or WALGA. Cr Dew was first elected to the Waroona Shire Council in 1999, and has retained this position since. Throughout these 22 years, Cr Dew has served on numerous committees, taskforces, advisory bodies and working groups. Cr Dew has also served as Shire President for 3 terms between 2007 and 2009, 2011 and 2013, and 2015 and 2017, and as Deputy Shire President for 1 term between 2003 and 2005.

 

Local recipients of the Long and Loyal Service Award were Mr John Salerian, Cr Larry Scott and Cr Mike Walmsley. This award is for long service of a high degree to local government, the local government sector or WALGA, spanning over 12 or more years. Mr Salerian was elected to the Waroona Shire Council in 2007, and retained this position until 2019. Cr Scott was elected to the Waroona Shire Council in 2007, and has retained this position since, and served as Deputy Shire President for 4 terms between 2009 and 2013, and 2015 and 2019. Cr Walmsley was first elected to the Waroona Shire Council in 2002, and retained this position until 2011. He then returned in 2017 and has retained this position since. Cr Walmsley has also served as Shire President for 3 terms between 2009 and 2011, and from 2017 until present, and as Deputy Shire President for 1 term between 2007 and 2009

 

Mr Craig Wright was awarded the Merit Award for distinguished service to the community through the local government of the Shire of Waroona for a minimum of 4 years. Mr Wright was elected to the Waroona Shire Council in 2007, and retained this position until 2019.

 

Councillors and ex-Councillors received their awards at WALGA’s Annual General Meeting alongside 17 other Local Government Elected Members and Officers from around the state as part of WALGA’s honours program.

 

WALGA President Mayor Tracey Roberts congratulated all award recipients, highlighting their role as dedicated community leaders.

 
“I am delighted to acknowledge the services of this group of exemplary leaders who have all played a significant part in creating the communities that we are all proud of across Western Australia,” she said.
 
“I am continually inspired by the quality of local leadership we have across all our WA communities, and I thank our award recipients for their vision, their service and their compassion for others.”
 
“These awards recognise the leaders who, through many years of hard work and personal commitment, created communities that thrive and prosper, even in the face of global adversity,” Mayor Roberts said.
