Proposed Offshore Wind Area: Indian Ocean off Bunbury, Western Australia

The Minister for Climate Change and Energy has proposed an area within Commonwealth waters in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia for offshore renewable energy, particularly offshore wind. This is proposing an area within which future offshore wind projects could be considered. Please see map of the proposed area below:

Consultation on this proposed area is now open and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water seeks the community’s feedback on the area and how offshore wind could share the area with other users and interests. The feedback will help inform the Minister’s decision on whether the proposed area is suitable for offshore wind energy.

Submissions can be made through the Consultation Hub Have Your Say portal. Submissions close at 11:59 PM AWST on Friday 3 May 2024. For the Minister to consider submissions, it must be provided through the Consultation Hub by this deadline.

A number of supporting documents are available on the Have Your Say portal. These provide information on the offshore wind consultation and declaration process, as well as frequently asked questions and additional information on the existing users in the region.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is hosting five community drop-in sessions in Bunbury, Busselton, Harvey and Mandurah where they will be happy to discuss the proposed area and answer any questions the community may have. There is no formal presentation at these sessions, they are designed to enable the community and other stakeholders to drop in at any time throughout the session time to have their questions answered.
