To reduce plastic pollution, the WA Government is implementing a ban on certain plastic items, these bans take effect from 1 July 2022.
The 2022 ban includes items such as: all plastic shopping bags (including thick bags); disposable plastic straws, cutlery; disposable plastic cups for cold drinks; and a range of food ware items. Please note that compostable or ‘plant-based’ plastics are also not allowed for most of these items. Detailed information on the ban and allowed alternatives is available here: www.plasticsbanwa.com.au
Given the wide range of items, the ban impacts a large proportion of retailers many will need to take urgent action to be compliant by the enforcement dates.
The National Retail Association (NRA) is delivering a range of resources and assistance for businesses including a tollfree hotline (1800 817 723), website for businesses (www.plasticsbanwa.com.au) and a range of factsheets, posters and point-of-sale materials to help.
